Demonstration of a Home Exercise Program

Demonstration of a home exercise program in the PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) upper extremity diagonal patterns. These exercises should only be done under the supervision of a qualified, trained therapist. Go to graphics version of the exercise program, where each exercise is presented in a GIF image of approximately 30K.

PNF HOME EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR:

(insert name)

Perform each exercise (insert number) times for (insert number) repetitions

Stop the exercise if you feel pain or discomfort

Rest in between each exercise to prevent over-fatigue

Remember to move through the full range of motion that you have

Contact your therapist (insert name) at (insert name/number) with any questions or concerns

Exercise #1:

Use right/left/both hand(s)
Perform exercise sitting/standing/lying down

Begin the exercise as in the Picture A.
Picture A: The picture shows a person standing with head tilted down, chin toward the chest. Arms are extended down along the body, hands open, and palms facing down.

Close your hand
Turn your arm and pull up and across

Your arm should be in the same position as in the Picture B.
Picture B: The picture shows a person standing with arm extended up over the head, about 45 degrees from horizontal. The fist is closed with the thumb facing up, knuckles facing forward.

Open your hand
Turn your arm and push down and out

Your arm will be in the same position as in the Picture A.
(Arms extended down along the body, hands open, and palms facing down.)

Repeat

Exercise #2:

Use right/left/both hand(s)
Perform exercise sitting/standing/lying down

Begin the exercise as in the Picture A.
Picture A: The picture shows a person standing with head tilted down, one arm is across the body. The upper arm is close to the body, with the elbow bent (about 75 degrees from vertical). The forearm crosses the front of the body and points slightly below the waist. The fist is closed with the knuckles pointing towards the toes.

Open your hand
Turn your arm and push up and out

Your arm should be in the same position as in the Picture B.
Picture B: The picture shows a person standing with one arm extended above the head (about 30 degrees from vertical). The hand is open with fingertips extended, and the palm faces up. The head is up and pointed towards the hand.

Close your hand
Turn your arm and pull down and across

Your arm will be in the same position as in the Picture A.
The picture shows a person standing with both arms crossed in front of the body. The arms are extended down and cross at about wrist level. Both fists are closed, palms facing the body and knuckles pointed towards the ground. (The forearm crosses the front of the body and points slightly below the waist. The fist is closed with the knuckles pointing towards the toes.)

Repeat

Exercise: The Lift

Perform exercise sitting/lying down

Begin the exercise as in the Picture A.
Picture A: The picture shows a person standing with head tilted down, one arm is across the body. The upper arm is close to the body, with the elbow bent (about 75 degrees from vertical). The forearm crosses the front of the body and points slightly below the waist. The fist is closed with the knuckles pointing towards the toes. The second arm is also close to the body; the hand holds the first arm slightly behind the wrist, with the palm facing up. The head faces the hands. Hold your (insert left or right) wrist with your (insert left or right) hand.

Open your (insert left or right) hand
Turn your arm and push up and out

Hold (insert number) seconds

Your arms should be in the same position as in the Picture B.
Picture B: The picture shows a person standing with both straight arms raised above the head. One is about 30 degrees from vertical (slightly out in front of the body), hand open and palm facing up. The second arm comes across the front of the head, the hand holds other arm slightly below the wrist, with the palm touching the inside of the first arm. The head is tipped up with the face pointed in the direction of the hands.

Close your (insert left or right) hand
Turn your arm and pull down and across

Your arms will be in the same position as in the Picture A.
(The upper arm is close to the body, with the elbow bent (about 75 degrees from vertical). The forearm crosses the front of the body and points slightly below the waist. The fist is closed with the knuckles pointing towards the toes. The second arm is also close to the body; the hand holds the first arm slightly behind the wrist, with the palm facing up.)

Repeat

Exercise: The Chop

Perform exercise sitting/lying down

Begin the exercise as in the Picture A.
Picture A: The picture shows a person standing with arms down. One arm is fully extended straight, with hand open and the fingertips pointing towards the toes. The other arm comes across the body, elbow bent slightly, with the hand gripping the first arm just above the wrist. The palm of the hand is touching the front portion of the first arm. Head is down and pointed towards the hands.

Hold your (insert right or left) wrist with your (insert right or left) hand
Turn your arm and pull up and across
Hold (insert number) seconds

Your arms should be in the same position as in the Picture B.
Picture B: The picture shows a person standing with both arms raised above the head. One arm is fully extended (about 45 degrees from vertical), fist closed, and out in front of the body. The other arm is bent and comes across the front of the head where the hand is gripping the first arm slightly below the wrist. The head is up facing in the direction of the hands.

Open your (insert right or left) hand
Turn your arm and push down and out

Your arms should be in the same position as in the Picture A.
(One arm is fully extended straight, with hand open and the fingertips pointing towards the toes. The other arm comes across the body, elbow bent slightly, with the hand gripping the first arm just above the wrist.)

Repeat

Use both arms
Perform exercise sitting/standing/lying down

Begin the exercise as in the Picture A.
Picture A: The picture shows a person standing with both arms slightly out to the sides of the body. Both hands are open with the palms facing towards the feet and fingertips pointed away from the body. Head is tilted slightly toward the ground.

Close your hands
Turn your arms and pull up and across

Your arms should be in the same position as in the Picture B.
Picture B: The picture shows a person standing with arms crossed in front of the body and raised above the head. Elbows are at eye level. The fists are closed with the palms facing behind the body. The head is up and looking forward.

Open your hands
Turn your arms and push down and out

Your arms will be in the same position as in the Picture A.
(Both arms slightly out to the sides of the body; both hands are open with the palms facing towards the feet and fingertips pointed away from the body.)

Repeat

Exercise #2 (use both arms)

Use both arms
Perform exercise sitting/standing/lying down

Begin the exercise as in the Picture A.
Picture A: The picture shows a person standing with both arms crossed in front of the body. The arms are extended down and cross at about wrist level. Both fists are closed, palms facing the body and knuckles pointed towards the ground. The head is down and facing the hands.

Open your hands
Turn your arms and push up and out.

Your arms should be in the same position as in the picture B.
Picture B: The picture shows a person standing with both arms raised above the head, and stretched out to form the letter V. The arms are fully extended with hands open and the palms facing up. The head is up and facing forward.

Close your hands
Turn your arms and pull down and across

Your arms will be in the same position as in the Picture A.
(The picture shows a person standing with both arms crossed in front of the body. The arms are extended down and cross at about wrist level. Both fists are closed, palms facing the body and knuckles pointed towards the ground.)
